As we all adjust to our current situation, we here are at the Y are finding that our members are coming together while staying apart in support of their neighbors and community. Y Members are sewing masks for our healthcare workers, calling each other to ensure their work out groups stay active, delivering groceries to those who cannot leave their homes, and supporting small businesses as best they can.
One Y member wanted to find a way to thank Y staff who are providing vital childcare services for healthcare workers and other essential staff and help her neighborhood pizzeria at the same time. The result was something truly wonderful. Here is Bonnie’s story:
We are all learning to cope with the challenges the coronavirus presents to our personal lives, the community, and the world. After the announcement of school closures, the YMCA quickly pulled together teams to provide childcare for healthcare workers. We need to keep our health care systems functioning, staffed, and prepared to treat sick patients. Childcare is a tremendous service to our community.
At the same time, I am heartbroken for the hardships our small businesses are facing.
As a gesture of appreciation to the YMCA staff for providing childcare during school closures and to help a neighborhood small business, Mark and I are providing Bulldog Pizza to the YMCA staff this Wednesday.
We are all in this together, we all carry a burden and a story. May we continue to support each other in kindness and compassion.
Disclaimer: I have been a member of the YMCA for decades. I am a nurse anesthetist at St. Luke's Hospital and I love Bulldog Pizza.
The Y is so grateful to Bonnie and Mark for thinking of us at this time. We continue to be amazed by the generosity of our community, from those who are joining with us at this time to meet the critical needs of our community through donations, to our Y members who are keeping their memberships active even though our facilities are closed. Together we will make it through this. And as we continue to do all we can for others, we will come through this stronger and more connected.
The Y.
Here For Good.
