Great Lakes Aquarium Kits Training

Free for partners, 20$ for general public.
Join Great Lakes Aquarium staff for demonstrations of how to use Great Lakes Aquarium Kits available for free check-out. Featured activities include Run For Your Life Cycle (games related to the life cycle and challenges sturgeon face), Observations and Questions (includes fun instruments for exploring grassy fields or forests right where you are!) and more. Bike Fleet Training

Woodland YMCA, 3211 Allendale Avenue.
Free

This training is required for programs and groups who wish to use the Duluth Community Bike Fleet for activities such as group rides, field trips, bike rodeos, or parking lot obstacle courses. Program coordinators and program staff who implement daily activities are encouraged to attend. Training will consist of a classroom presentation on rules of the road and bike safety, bike fleet trailer orientation, and a group bike ride (bikes and helmets provided).

 

Walk, Bike, Fun Curriculum Training

Proctor Area Community Center, 100 Pionk Drive, Proctor, MN 55810.
Free
Designed for physical education, health teachers, other educators and community partners to engage kids in a thoughtful, playful and interactive program learning safety tips and skills for walking and biking, or enhancing your Safe Routes to School plan. Breakfast, lunch, bikes and helmets provided. Breakfast 7:45 – 8:00 a.m. Training begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. Be prepared to ride a bike for 2 – 3 miles in the community – comfortable clothing is suggested. Educators will receive CEUs, the curriculum, supplemental materials and a scholarship for substitute teacher pay (if requested). Bring your calendar with – BikeMN has a fleet of bikes with helmets that you may reserve for FREE, when you teach the curriculum to your students. And their calendar fills up fast! Canoe Instruction Training

Rock Pond at Bagley Park, West Saint Marie Street.
Free for partners, 20$ for general public. 

Join UMD instructors to learn canoe strokes, rescues, and games to play with kids on the water. Then bring kids paddling on Rock Pond throughout the summer! See Adventure Series for dates and times. Advance registration required by emailing: yod@duluthymca.org, or calling 218-722-4745 x140.

 

Belay Training

Vertical Endeavors 329 South Lake Ave, Duluth, MN 55802.
Free

Come learn how to top-rope belay from qualified Vertical Endeavors instructors! You may have the option to get “checked-off” to belay at this course, opening opportunities to keep youth, your peers, your friends, and the community safe when climbing during activities and events throughout the summer. Open to youth serving agency staff, volunteers, and teens. Advance registration required by emailing: yod@duluthymca.org, or calling 218-722-4745 x140.

 

Gear and Curriculum Library Training

Lincoln Park Middle School
Chester Park.
Free for partners, 20$ for general public.
Learn what kits are available for you to check out from the Youth Outdoors-Duluth Gear and Curriculum Library and how to use materials and lessons included. This training grants YO-D partners access to knot tying and shelter construction, traditional fire building technologies and campfire cooking, animal tracking and stuffed animal habitat, compasses and navigation, fishing, bird watching, rain jackets and more. For partners only. Equipment


 

Take kids fishing or skiing, make plaster casts of animal tracks, teach and practice the skills of fire building and campfire cooking, tie knots, set up shelters, and more. Make sure you are prepared for stormy weather with our rain jackets. Lesson and activity ideas included.

YMCA Bike Fleet: Reserve
The YMCA Bike Fleet features sixteen 20” and 24” mountain bikes, four 26” commuter style bikes, and 20 adjustable Bike Friday bikes.
Fill out the reservation form and contact Kelcie Driessen at kdriessen@duluthymca.org, or 722-4745 x182 to reserve, pick-up, or drop off the trailer.
