Touching Lives, Creating the Future Capital Campaign

Since 1882, the Duluth YMCA has been building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. One way we do this is by building strong buildings for our programs and for our community use in Duluth. Our current campaign, "Touching Lives, Creating the Future" started in 2007.

We stand at a critical juncture. The times we live in present new challenges and needs, especially among our young people. The number of people using the YMCA facility is expanding - a reality taxing our facility. On the positive side, new populations, renewed interest in Downtown Duluth and expanded programs are creating exciting new opportunities. To meet the needs and these opportunities, we need to renovate and remodel the YMCA.

Statement of Need

The present YMCA facility was constructed over 40 years ago - a virtual lifetime ago. Although designed for a different generation, it has served Duluth and our citizens well. However, many changes are needed to meet the challenges, demands and needs of the 21st century. In its present configuration, the YMCA building does not provide appropriate space for youth or youth programs. Space cannot be provided for seniors on a consistent schedule. The building is nearly without dedicated space for teen activities as it is currently configured. Heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems are inefficient and outdated. There is inadequate space for group fitness activities and the wellness center is undersized for the growing demand. There is also a constant concern about parking accommodations and personal security/safety issues.

The proposed remodeling, renovations and additions will provide much-needed space for youth, families, adults and seniors. It will increase the number of youth and families we will be able to serve and it will broaden the scope of programs we are able to offer. It will provide the means for healthier lifestyles for all ages. It will meet both present and future demands.

The Duluth YMCA accepts the responsibility it has to provide the best possible facilities for the community. However, it cannot provide for the much-needed changes to its present building with its operational budget alone. We must turn to the community and ask for capital support. By providing your assistance, you will be making possible a Community Center that will house much-needed programs and activities, keeping pace with the community for many years in the future. We are asking for your assistance in building strong kids, strong families and a strong community.

Meeting the Need

After several years of careful consideration and numerous studies, the Duluth YMCA has embarked on a $4,000,000 Capital Campaign that will ultimately provide a facility which will be the tool to creating and implementing programs for all people.
