History of the Duluth Area Family YMCA

The Duluth Area Family YMCA was founded in 1882. We are an independent, local, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization.

The story of the Duluth YMCA is the story of a growing, changing Duluth. It started from an idea in the minds of a small group of men to the expansion of what it is today – one of the largest nonprofit organizations in Duluth, providing hundreds of programs and activities for generations of Duluth citizens.

About the Duluth YMCA

Our Mission:
The Duluth YMCA is dedicated to putting the principles of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Our Theme:
We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.

Our Core Values:
The YMCA's core values serve as the foundation for YMCA of USA character-development resources. The Duluth YMCA strives to incorporate the four core values into all of its programs, activities, and interpersonal interactions taking place at the YMCA.
• Caring: to demonstrate a sincere concern for others, for their needs and well-being
• Honesty: to tell the truth, to demonstrate reliability and trustworthiness through actions that are in keeping with my stated positions and beliefs.
• Respect: to treat others as I would want them to treat me, to value the worth of every person, including myself.
• Responsibility: to do what is right--what I ought to do, to be accountable for my choices of behavior and actions and my promises.

The YMCA Strives To Be:

• Inclusive and diverse. Our mission calls us to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. We welcome all people regardless of age, race, ethnic heritage, mental or physical ability, gender, sexual orientation, work background, marital status, military experience, religious beliefs, education, income, parental status, or geographic location.

• Accessible to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. We will make every effort to ensure that membership, programs and services are available to the entire community, especially youth, regardless of their financial situation. Financial assistance is supported by contributions from our annual Strong Kids Campaign and grants from local and regional funders that provide scholarships and subsidies for qualifying applicants within our available resources. Please let us know if we may serve you or your family in this way.

• Focused on long-term, lifetime relationships. To improve, change, and save lives, we seek to link up with people and work with them throughout their lives. Long-term relationships make it possible for us to have a lasting, positive impact on our members and participants.

• An example of sharing and caring. We seek to be an example of sharing and caring that will inspire others in our community to share and care also.
